About the Organization

Project Enlist Canada is a catalyst for critical research on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) in military Veterans and service members.

TBI due to blast injury or exposure, as well as other service-related causes, is a significant problem in the military community. However, the scientific understanding of TBI and related disorders is in its infancy, and we lack both effective treatments and active diagnostic testing for living patients.

Ryan Carey Advocate

Captain (Ret’d) Ryan Carey is a distinguished Canadian Armed Forces Veteran, former professional football player, and a leading advocate for brain health in military communities.

Currently serving as the Sr. Director of Military Engagement for Project Enlist Canada under the Concussion Legacy Foundation, Carey is at the forefront of efforts to accelerate research on traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) among veterans and service members.

After retiring from the military in 2016, Carey turned his focus to supporting fellow Veterans. Through Project Enlist Canada, he encourages Veterans to participate in critical brain research by pledging to donate their brains posthumously, aiming to advance understanding and treatment of service-related brain injuries.

Carey's commitment to Veteran well-being extends to being actively involved with teaching guitars to Veterans, using music and sports as therapeutic tools to aid in recovery and community building. He also served as Canada's flag bearer at the 2017 Invictus Games and competed in archery, sitting volleyball, and swimming at the 2021 Games, exemplifying resilience and the enduring spirit of service.

As a speaker and advocate, Captain Carey brings a wealth of experience and insight into the challenges faced by Veterans, emphasizing the importance of research, community support, and proactive engagement in addressing the invisible wounds of war.
