This year, with a whole new committee of neighbours, we are planning Embrun’s Accessible Halloween.
Creating an accessible Halloween event is not just a kind gesture but an essential one. It ensures that all children and adults, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate in and enjoy the festivities.
Accessible events promote inclusivity, foster a sense of belonging, and provide opportunities for kids and adults with special needs to engage in holiday activities.

The Setup
Our inclusive Halloween event takes place in a local community neighbourhood that is wheelchair-accessible. The event is free for all participants, thanks to the generous support of local businesses and volunteers.

-
The key features of our event included:
Sensory-Friendly Environment
We created a calm and comfortable atmosphere to accommodate children with sensory sensitivities. There was no strobe lighting, and we provided quiet spaces along with sensory stations featuring soothing materials.
-
Adapted Trick-or-Treat Trail
We set up a trick-or-treat trail where kids with special needs could go from station to station, collecting treats. Each station was staffed with volunteers who understood the diverse needs of the participants. We also offered non-food treats, such as small toys or sensory items, for children on special diets or those on the spectrum who preferred alternatives to candy.
-
Allergies
In addition to ensuring the physical environment was accessible, we recognized the importance of providing allergy-friendly options. We included nut-free candies, gluten-free snacks, and dairy-free treats, ensuring that children and adults with food allergies—often present alongside other conditions—could also enjoy the excitement of trick-or-treating without worrying about allergens.
-
Accessibility Features
To make the event as inclusive and comfortable as possible, there will be a wheelchair-accessible porta-potty on site, plus a Changing Station Tent equipped with a table setup to accommodate families and individuals who may need additional support.
-
Spooky Fun & Special Guests
Get ready for an unforgettable experience with amazing Halloween decorations that will transform the neighbourhood into a magical, spooky wonderland! To make the day even more exciting, we’ll also have special guest appearances that will surprise and delight participants of all ages.

Friendly Ghosts
These specially designed ghosts will offer a tactile and visually engaging experience, allowing children and adults alike to interact with Halloween decorations in a unique and accessible way. We believe that everyone deserves to feel the magic of Halloween, and our sensory-friendly crafts are a step towards making that happen.

Sensory Halloween Board
This specially designed sensory board offers a multi-sensory and interactive experience, inviting children and adults to explore different textures, shapes, and materials in a fun and inclusive way. By engaging touch, sight, and curiosity, this board creates a safe and welcoming space for everyone to enjoy. We believe that the magic of Halloween should be accessible to all, and this sensory-friendly board is a step towards making that possible.

As we look ahead to next Halloween, let this event serve as a reminder that inclusivity and accessibility should be at the forefront of all community activities. Every child deserves the opportunity to create lasting Halloween memories, regardless of their abilities.
